Susan Roston

Tell us about yourself.

My interest in fused glass began when I took a week long class at Snow Farm in Williamsburg, Massachusetts 15 years ago. I had been working with stained glass but felt constrained by this medium. Fused glass allowed me to experiment and express myself more freely. After my class I set up a studio in my house where I experimented with different techniques.

My work has been accepted in several juried shows including The American Craft Festival at Lincoln Center for the Performing arts; Paradise City Craft Fair, Northhampton; Great Barrington. Massachusetts Crafts Fair; Berkshire Craft Festival,; ArtRider Rhinebeck, NY,. My work has been shown at the Bunker Hill Community College; the Sharon Arts Center, Peterborough, NH; Jaffrey Civic Center, NH; Fitchburg Art Museum, Dana Farber Cancer Institute; Gardner Museum, Gardner, Massachusetts. I am a member of the NH League of Craftsmen, The Monadnock Area Artists, Gardner Area League of Artists, and I’m a former Vice President for the Monadnock Art/ Friends of Dublin Art Colony Open Studio Tour.

What draws you to the material you work with?

I like experimenting with fused glass in trying to capture the luminosity, transparency, and radiance of light. I seek to explore the unfolding of forms, colors, textures in the layering of glass and inclusions. This art form has taught me patience, focusing, perseverance, and the enjoyment of experimentation. No matter how much you learn, the moment of opening the kiln is always a surprise.

Why are you a member of GAS?

I love the interchange with other glass artists. Not only do I experiment with glass, but I’m also a glass art collector and own many pieces from the GAS members.
