Job description: Studio Technician + Glass Instructor

Start date: March, 2025

Reports to: Studio Manager 

Hours: 30-40 hours/week, split time between tech and studio instruction, hourly, non-exempt

Pay and Benefits: $22.50/hour tech rate, $27.50/hour instructor rate, health insurance benefits, opt in dental and vision benefits, PTO and Sick Time

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Studio Manager, the technician is responsible for supporting the studio manager in the operation and maintenance of all studios and programs including the hot shop, cold shop, kilns, flame shop and flat glass studios. On a weekly basis, the studio tech will teach basic Make Your Owns in the hot shop.

Responsibilities:
Primary duties include charging the glass furnaces, cleaning, general maintenance of the glass studios and equipment, and instructing classes.

Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Charge the furnace, which may include working evenings and nights
  • Hands on maintenance of studio equipment & facility
  • Work with the Studio Manager to help maintain a clean, safe and functioning work space in all studios
  • Work with Studio Manager to help schedule renters and classes 
  • Informing the studio manager of any and all issues relating to the studio and equipment
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times in a supportive and respectful environment
  • Monitor and maintain studio equipment
  • Safely instructing students during classes
  • Perform other duties & responsibilities as required

Qualifications:

  • Applicant should have hands on experience in facility & equipment maintenance
  • Metalworking, woodworking, and refractory experience preferred 
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Must be self driven and able to take direction
  • Must be able to consistently lift and carry supplies and other items (including Glass) weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable using a ladder
  • Developed skills with electrical & hand tools
  • Position requires standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching and bending throughout the work day; standing for the entire shift should be expected
  • Must be able to work in the heat or cold throughout the entire work day
  • Must have 2+ years experience working with glass in a hot shop environment
  • Experience teaching in the hot shop is preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly and to maintain a safe working environment with regards to instructors and students

Working Conditions:

This position is based in a hot studio environment and is subject to frequent interruption, and requires a great deal of interaction with artists and the public, both in person and via other means of communication. Must be able to lift and carry supplies and other awkward items (including glass) weighing up to 50 lbs.  Must be comfortable using a ladder, basic hand tool skills such as drills and painting equipment. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending throughout the workday; standing and walking for the entire shift should be expected.  Must be able to see and hear.  Must be able to work in both the heat and minimally heated space throughout the 8-hour or longer work day.
