2018 Murano: Il Percorso di Vetro - The Glass Path

The island of Murano, Italy hosted the 47th annual Glass Art Society conference. The Glass Path led attendees through the winding path of the island’s remarkable history while exploring the future of glass and discovering the hidden routes connecting the conference venues. A selection of Murano’s glass factories and studios provided the Glass Art Society with the incredible opportunity to use these facilities as venues for the conference. Attendees were a part of the highly anticipated GAS conference programs including glass demonstrations and lectures on inspiring glass topics, and special programming unique to Murano while surrounded by the beauty of the region of Venice.

2017 Norfolk: Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance

The Glass Art Society selected the Chrysler Museum of Art and its Perry Glass Studio as host for the 46th annual conference, Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance. Attendees experienced technical glass demonstrations on various glass processes and topics; lectures on science and art; and special events such as a local Gallery Hop, Goblet Grab, International Student Exhibition, and Live and Silent Auction.

In this video, John Miller and his team push the envelope during this demo at the 2017 GAS Conference in Norfolk, Virginia, by constructing a 4-foot clear goblet joined together by using parts made on the fly in the Chrysler Museum’s Perry Glass Studio. Thanks to Echard Wheeler for the awesome video work!

2014 DEMO: Hot - Get it Wicked Hot and Swing it Over Your Head! By Richard Royal

Richard Royal is making a piece from the Optical Lens series, an homage to the Fresnel Lens, a type of lens used in lighthouses all over the world. Not only are they some of the most beautiful glass objects, but are instrumental in saving thousands of lives over many years in secluded and far off locations, as well as in densely populated places. Glass and light create safety, as a guiding force that is sometimes unnoticed and taken for granted

2012 DEMO: Hot - Cheeseburger Goblet by Michael Amis, John Miller, Amanda Pierce-Grahramany

In honor of Joel Phillip Myers, these former students of creating hot-glass assemblages inspired by sketches Amis made during his time as a Myers’ student at Illinois State University.

1998 Conference in Seto, Japan

“As our world becomes smaller, it becomes increasingly important that we begin to understand one another’s historical and cultural traditions. We believe that Japan, with its rich history and traditions in fine craft along with more contemporary expressions in glass art, was the perfect place to start. The conference program is as rich in diversity as the multicultural membership of the Glass Art Society. The official language of this gathering will be “glass,” the silent ambassador that as we all know can build bridges between people of diverse cultures.”

This video features Takako Sano and Michael Rogers, co-chairs of the 1998 Glass Art Society Conference in Seto, Japan. Honorary Lifetime Member Dan Daily, Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients Alice Rooney and Kyohei Fujita.

Breaking the Silence (2015)

“Breaking the Silence” is a site-specific glass installation by Kazuki Takizawa. It was installed at STARworks Glass Lab in Star, NC in December 2015 to increase awareness on suicide. The performance included a water system that sprinkled droplets of water into hundreds of off-centered vessels that eventually tipped over and fell.
