Karola Dischinger

Tell us about yourself.

Glass is the medium I am able to express my ideas, translate topics, emotions and interpretations. Working for about 25 years in glass and still learning. Before I worked in Human Resources for many years and started after some fusing classes with a 2-months glass blowing class at Penland. After this experience I was hooked on glass and started a second career but I had to go on with my old job to effort making glass. Since 2013 I have my own studio for kiln work.

What draws you to the material you work with?

The material offers a lot of room for interpretation and the possibility to represent the often
elusive, virtual, critical themes through transparency, lightness or fragility. My work gives me
the opportunity to express and share my ideas and thoughts.

What themes do you pursue in your work, and why have you chosen the processes that you use in your work?

All topics that affect people, such as the world of working and relationships, how people orient themselves and socialize, how they manage their lives and how they deal with planet Earth.

What is your dream project?

To have enough resources in financial terms, working space and exhibition place to translate all my ideas in big installations.

Why are you a member of GAS?

To get in touch with other glass artists, curators, museum people, gallery owners during the conference, making new contacts and to learn about new techniques, watching the demos and learning about the experiences of other artists, which are successful and able to make a living of their work.
