How would you explain your organization in 300 words or less?
Craft & Design at Harbourfront Centre is a unique Canadian career-oriented program and facility. It is an artist-in-residency, incubator and training centre that uses a self-directed learning ethos. It is open to post-graduates demonstrating a thorough and comprehensive understanding, conceptually and technically, in one of five areas: Textiles, Glass, Ceramics, Design or Metal. We make long-term commitments to artists by offering a broad range of resources and opportunities.
How did this program begin?
Craft & Design at Harbourfront Centre was initiated in 1974 as a Summer Program, “Sheridan Harbourfront.” Harbourfront invited students and faculty from Sheridan College, School of Crafts and Design, to set up studios. The public was able to watch and participate in activities. Originally located in the open air, space was subsequently given indoors, the present location. In April 2014, the Craft Department became “Craft & Design at Harbourfront Centre.” Craft & Design at Harbourfront Centre is the only program in Canada to offer an artist residency in contemporary craft and design with a strong professional development focus, shaping and informing the field through debate, discourse, and exhibitions.
What is unique about the community you serve?
We not only serve glass artists but ceramics, jewellery textiles and design.
How are you keeping your program financially sustainable & what strategies do you recommend?
Through the inspired leadership of our senior management. We also pass all relief funding resources on to our current artists and alumni. Canada has provided relief funding that the artists can take advantage of $2000/mo for 16 weeks. We also secured their positions in the Studio and waived their rent until we return. Communication is key.
What impact are you seeing & how do you measure success?
The impact is obvious for so many. Loss of studio space and income. Worry about rent and groceries – the basics. Success – we are still here!
