We recommend medical and travel insurance to protect against last-minute trip cancellations and other travel-related risks. Comprehensive travel insurance policies package together a number of valuable benefits. You can also buy policies that cover only trip cancellation or only medical expenses.
GAS is unable to advise on trip insurance or make a provider recommendation. You can purchase travel insurance from any reputable Travel Insurance company. With the wide variety of plans available, you can find coverage levels that will fit your budget and trip needs.
Here are some reasons you may need travel insurance:
- You will lose money in non-refundable deposits if you cancel the trip. Trip cancellation is the coverage you want. It will cover 100% of the pre-paid money you’ll lose, as long as you cancel for a reason listed in the policy,
- You are traveling overseas and your health plan doesn’t have global coverage. Many health plans lack robust global coverage or impose high out-of-network deductibles for care outside the U.S. Check your health plan details to see what it provides. Travel medical insurance fills the gap.
- You are going to a remote area. If you are not near a quality medical facility, even a small injury could turn into a major medical event. Medical evacuation coverage will pay to medevac you to an adequate facility.
- You want emergency backup. The 24/7 travel assistance lines that are included with travel insurance can assist you with finding a pharmacy, language translation, replacing a lost passport and much more.
For our Italy trip in September 2025:
A minimum of 12 guests is required for this travel program to proceed. Please wait to hear from GAS to confirm this minimum before making your individual international flight arrangements.
All cancellations must be in writing to [email protected]. All cancellations are subject to a $250 cancellation fee and a $300 non-refundable contribution to GAS. All cancellations must be made at least 90 days in advance of the trip start date.
For the Italy trip, cancellations must be received no later than June 23, 2025. No refunds will be made after this date except in the case of a documented medical emergency, in which case all funds less the cancellation fee, donation, and expenses already incurred, or contractually obligated to be paid, by GAS (non-refundable deposits paid to suppliers on your behalf) will be refunded. There is no refund for a partially completed tour or for unused services of any kind. Trip cancellation insurance is highly recommended.
In the case that GAS cancels the trip for any reason other than a Force Majeure*, a full refund will be issued. If the trip is canceled due to a Force Majeure*, a full refund will be issued except for expenses already incurred or contractually obligated to be paid by GAS (non-refundable deposits paid to suppliers on your behalf).

Yes, we require all travelers to be 18+ in order to have the opportunity to participate in all planned activities.
GAS rates all our travel programs with an activity level to help you assess the physical demands of the trip. Look for the excursion ratings next to each trip (mild, moderate or active) to determine if this tour is the right one for you.
Please note that GAS staff are unable to offer 1:1 special assistance on our trips. This includes physical assistance, daily wheelchair assistance, in-flight assistance, baggage assistance, in-room assistance, etc. Should you require extra support, please consider traveling with a companion to assist with your personal needs.
* Mild
Suitable for most people with average fitness, involving short distances, minimal elevation changes, and light activity levels. There may be stairs without handrails to climb, and walking periods can last up to an hour. While the routes generally consist of level ground, there may be occasional cobblestones, uneven pavement, or unpaved paths. There will be times when you’ll need to stand during the walk or at an event. Additionally, embarking and disembarking from motor coaches and other transportation methods will be part of the program.
**Moderate
Requires a reasonable level of fitness, with moderate distances, some elevation changes, and activities that may demand sustained endurance for a few hours per day. On these programs, you can expect to walk 1-2 miles at a time while visiting different sites and participating in walking tours. Some excursions may involve climbing multiple flights of stairs without handrails, as well as walking on uneven pavement, unpaved roads, paths, or cobblestones. There may be instances where you’ll need to stand for up to an hour at sites where seating is not available.
***Active
Demands a good level of fitness and experience, with longer distances, significant elevation changes, potentially technical terrain, and activities requiring sustained physical effort. These programs may include more active components such as walking longer distances of 3 miles or more per day. You can expect to encounter hills and/or uneven terrain on several days. Additionally, on each day of the program, there may be instances where you’ll need to stand for long periods of time without difficulty.
Our Italy trip has a “moderate” physical activity level. We will be doing a lot of walking on unsteady terrain (cobblestones and flat pavers) and there will be much stepping up and down required when crossing bridges, climbing in and out of the water bus, and entering buildings, attractions, and restaurants that have steps. You will need to be able to:
- Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
- Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to 3 hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- Be able to walk 1-2 miles at a time while visiting different studios/sites and participating in walking tours.
- Be able to climb multiple flights of stairs without handrails, as well as walk on uneven pavement, unpaved roads, paths, or cobblestones.
- Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
